Product Analysis: ifm electronic SI5004
The ifm electronic SI5004 is a compact and highly reliable flow monitor designed for the continuous monitoring of flow rates in liquid and gaseous media. Utilizing the calorimetric (thermal) principle, this sensor is ideal for monitoring cooling circuits in welding systems, induction furnaces, and machine tools, as well as providing dry-run protection for industrial pumps.
Thermal Sensing Performance
The SI5004 features a probe that is heated internally. The flow of the medium carries heat away from the probe; the faster the flow, the greater the cooling effect. This temperature change is converted into a switching signal. The SI5004 is programmable, allowing users to set flow thresholds via a pushbutton interface. The integrated LED bar graph provides an immediate visual indication of the current flow relative to the set point.
Key Technical Characteristics
- Part Number: SI5004.
- Process Connection: G 1/2 A (Internal thread).
- Medium: Water, Oils, Glycol, Gases.
- Pressure Rating: Up to 300 bar.
- Output Function: PNP/NPN (Programmable).
- Operating Voltage: 18…36V DC.
- Protection: IP67.
- Setting Range: 3…300 cm/s (Liquids); 200…3000 cm/s (Gases).
Industrial Durability
Constructed from high-grade 316L stainless steel, the SI5004 is resistant to corrosion and high-pressure environments. Its lack of moving parts means it is not subject to mechanical wear, ensuring a significantly longer service life compared to traditional mechanical flow switches. Its fast response time and high repeatability make it a crucial safety component for high-value industrial equipment.
| Feature | Value |
| Response Time | 1s to 10s (Adjustable) |
| Liquid Temp Range | -25°C to +80°C |
| Signal Status | LED Bar Graph (Red/Amber/Green) |
Technical Note
For accurate readings, the SI5004 probe must be fully immersed in the flow. It is recommended to install the sensor in a straight section of pipe with a minimum of 5x pipe diameter of straight run upstream to ensure a stable flow profile. Regular inspection for calcium or mineral deposits on the probe is advised in water-cooling applications.
