Product Analysis: ifm electronic IN5224
The ifm electronic IN5224 is a robust inductive proximity sensor designed for the non-contact detection of metallic objects. Inductive sensors are the «eyes» of automated machinery, used for detecting end-positions, counting parts, or monitoring rotations. The IN5224 is a cylindrical M12 threaded unit, making it one of the most versatile and easily integrated sensors in the ifm portfolio, suitable for everything from simple conveyor systems to complex CNC machining centers.
Reliable Detection and Construction
This sensor features a 4 mm sensing range and is designed for flush mounting, meaning it can be embedded directly into a metal machine frame without interference. It utilizes a DC PNP electrical design with a Normally Open (NO) output. The housing is made of nickel-plated brass with a sensing face of LCP (Liquid Crystal Polymer), ensuring resistance to mechanical impact and typical industrial contaminants.

Performance in Industrial Environments
The IN5224 is built to handle the stresses of continuous industrial operation. With an IP67 protection rating, it is sealed against dust and the temporary effects of immersion in water. It features short-circuit and overload protection, as well as reverse polarity protection, making it «maintenance-friendly» and resistant to wiring errors during installation. The integrated yellow LED provides clear visual feedback of the switching state, even from a distance.
| Feature | Value |
| Hysteresis | 1…20% of the sensing range |
| Correction Factors | Steel (1), Al (0.45), Cu (0.4) |
| Ambient Temperature | -25°C to +70°C |
Technical Note
For optimal detection, ensure that the target material is factored into the sensing distance. While the range for mild steel is 4mm, non-ferrous metals like aluminum or copper will require the target to be closer to the sensing face. Always use the included mounting nuts to secure the sensor without over-torquing the M12 threads.
